How to Win Best of Kansas City: Nominations, Finals and Voting

Short answer

Winning The Pitch's Best of Kansas City voting takes two wins: enough nominations under your exact business name to reach the finalist cut, then the final round itself. The 2026 nominations closed March 31, with finalists due April 22. The Pitch's rules allow one valid entry per person per day in nominations and one per round in the final, forbid incentives for picks, and leave nobody able to promise a place.

How does The Pitch's Best of KC voting work, and who runs it?

The Pitch KC runs The Pitch's Best of KC on its own site in two stages: readers nominate first, then pick among finalists. The Pitch's FAQ says the results pass through software and then a hand audit before publication, across more than 500 categories that try to cover the whole city.

Two details shape everything after that. The first is that a business does not exist in the contest until readers write it in; being well known outside the form counts for nothing. The second is the audit. According to The Pitch's April 2026 newsletter, the organizer was about halfway through checking more than 38,000 nomination submissions in a process it put at roughly 70 hours. Somebody reads that list by hand.

Advertising in The Pitch does not buy a seat in the Best of KC final round either. The Pitch's FAQ lets advertisers remind readers about their work before the final, and it says plainly that they get no special treatment in the count or in naming the winner. I'd take that at face value. An ad in the paper is a reminder to people who already like you, and that's all it is.

When do Best of KC nominations and the final round open and close?

The Pitch's 2026 calendar ran nominations through March 31 and set April 22 for the finalist reveal. In our tracking, the organizer's dated rows open in April and close in May (1 of 1 rows, database snapshot 2026-10-02), an edition appears in 8 years of the 2019-2026 window, and 2027 is the next expected edition.

Older editions ran on other clocks, which is why I wouldn't plan from memory. In 2013 the paper sent the top three of each category (ties aside) into a second round. The 2014 second round ran from August 20 through September 17, with winners printed in the October 9 issue. In 2020 nominations stayed open through August before the top spots were tallied. One organizer, three calendars.

Missouri as a whole runs later. According to our tracking, the median promotion window is 28 days across 154 voting and nomination promotions in Missouri that their platforms dated with a start and an end between 2016 and 2026, and August is the most common opening month for 87 recurring Missouri programs with a recorded start (21% of 87). The Pitch's spring schedule sits outside that pattern, so a Kansas City business that waits for late summer can miss the whole cycle.

How do you get nominated and reach the Best of KC finalist round?

Getting nominated for The Pitch's Best of KC depends on readers typing your business into the nomination form, and the FAQ lets anyone in Kansas City submit one nomination for each category. Finalists come from the most-nominated names: in 2020 The Pitch said it would tally the top spots in every category once nominations closed.

The Pitch's FAQ is unusually direct about asking. It tells businesses to encourage followers, customers, family and friends to nominate them, down to someone met once at a party. So asking is expected. What the FAQ cannot settle for you is consistency. If some customers type the full legal name, others the nickname and others the street corner, the software and the hand audit have to decide whether those are one business or three. That's my reasoning rather than a quoted rule, but I'd fix the name before anything else.

The category deserves the same care. With more than 500 to choose from, a bakery might fit several; I'd choose the one where customers already describe you that way and ask for that one alone. Splitting requests across categories splits the nominations with them. One wrinkle is worth writing down: the FAQ speaks of one nomination per category, while the rules page allows one valid entry per entrant per day in the nomination round. Read both for the edition you enter and follow the stricter reading.

Which Best of KC rules can cost a Kansas City business its place?

The rules of The Pitch's Best of KC awards prohibit offering payment or other incentives in exchange for votes, and the offense may bring disqualification. The same rules page caps each entrant at one valid entry per day in the nomination round and one per round in the final.

Incentive is the word that catches local businesses, because it reaches well past cash. A free pastry for anyone who shows a confirmation screen, a raffle ticket for a screenshot, a gift basket drawn among customers who took part: each one trades a reward for a pick. The rule names payment or any other incentive, and it lists no exceptions. If an idea sits anywhere near that line, I'd put it to The Pitch in writing before printing a single flyer.

Stuffing is the other line. The Pitch's FAQ says people try it all the time and that the paper knows when they do, without saying how. That silence is useful to you. Nobody outside The Pitch knows which signal flags an entry, so the only count worth having is one real person using their own allowance once per day in nominations and once per round in the final. Anything past that puts at risk the very entry it was meant to help.

How do Kansas City businesses win Best of KC without breaking the rules?

A Kansas City business wins Best of KC within the rules by asking people who already buy from it, at the right stage and inside The Pitch's limit of one valid entry per person per day in nominations and one per round at the final, with nothing offered in return.

Timing beats repetition. A regular asked once on the day nominations open is more use than one asked five times in the final hour, partly because the cap stops the extra entries anyway and partly because goodwill runs out. Your own customers are the base. Strangers reached by an ad come second, and only if they actually know the place. The pieces I'd prepare for a shop or restaurant:

  • Counter cards, receipts and menus printed with the exact business name and the one category, ready before nominations open.
  • One email or text to your own customer list when nominations open, and one more in the final week before they close.
  • A short post with clear storefront photos on finalist-reveal day, if your name makes The Pitch's list.
  • A fresh request for the final round, which only finalists reach, using the same spelling as before.
  • Staff briefed to say where the form is, without offering anything for a pick.

Can an agency help with Best of KC, and what may it do?

Voting Now can promote a Kansas City entry in The Pitch's Best of KC only in ways the rules leave open: ads, native PR and posts through our own social accounts, partner groups and bloggers, asking real local people to nominate or pick, with no incentive attached and no promise of a place.

Voting Now does not sell contest votes directly. We sell promotion for contest entries, priced the way advertisers price leads, with a quote agreed before anything runs. Before quoting, we read The Pitch's rules page for the edition in question, and if a clause or a written reply from the paper rules out outside promotion, we decline the job. A Best of KC entry with a loyal customer base and no promotion at all is a perfectly good entry.

Promotion cannot touch the nomination-to-finalist cut, the software screen, the hand audit or the paper's own decision. Nobody can promise you a finalist slot or a win, and we don't. Ads shown to people far from your door bring clicks, not customers who care which bakery wins. Example scenario (illustrative - not a client result): a neighborhood restaurant settles on one category in winter, prints its exact name on menus, asks regulars during nominations, waits for the finalist list, and asks again only if it made the cut. If it did not, the year ends there. Send us the contest link for a free analysis and we'll say plainly whether promotion makes sense.

Step by step

  1. Save the edition's rules

Open The Pitch's Best of KC rules page when the edition is announced, save a dated copy, and write down the nomination close, the finalist reveal and the final-round dates.

  2. Fix one name, one category

Choose the single category where customers already describe you, then print the exact business name on cards, menus and receipts so every nomination matches the others.

  3. Ask during nominations

Ask regulars, staff, suppliers and friends to nominate you while the round is open. The Pitch's FAQ encourages exactly this, and nothing is offered in return for it.

  4. Watch the finalist list

Check the finalist reveal on its published date. If your name is missing, that category is finished for the edition; if it is listed, prepare the final-round request the same day.

  5. Ask once per final round

Send one clear request per channel during the final, inside the one-entry-per-round limit, and keep a copy of every message in case The Pitch asks how supporters were reached.

Questions and answers

How can a Kansas City business win local business awards like Best of KC?

A Kansas City business wins local business awards like The Pitch's Best of KC by earning enough reader nominations under one exact name to reach the finalist list, then winning the final round. The Pitch counts one valid entry per person per round in the final and bans incentives, so the work is asking real customers at the right moments. An ad in the paper gives no special treatment in the tally.

How do you get Best of Omaha, and does the Kansas City approach carry over?

Best of Omaha answers to its own publisher's rules, so the Kansas City approach carries over as a method and not as a set of dates or limits. The method is the same: find the official rules page, note the nomination window, the per-person limit and any incentive ban, then ask real customers under one exact name. None of The Pitch's caps or deadlines apply in Omaha.

How would you win Best of Boston with the same method?

Winning Best of Boston with the same method means reading that program's own rules before asking anyone, because each publisher sets its own rounds, limits and bans. The part of the Kansas City lesson that travels is structural. A nomination stage decides who reaches the final, one exact business name keeps entries from splitting, and a reward for picks is a reliable way out wherever the rules forbid it.

How do you get nominated for Best of Las Vegas compared with Best of KC?

Getting nominated for Best of Las Vegas depends on that program's own nomination form and rules, which have nothing to do with The Pitch's Best of KC. In Kansas City, anyone may submit one nomination for each category, and The Pitch's FAQ encourages businesses to ask customers, friends and family. Check whether the Las Vegas organizer allows the same, and whether it caps entries per day.

Is a gift basket for customers who take part allowed in Best of Kansas City?

No. A gift basket, discount or raffle offered to customers in exchange for a pick is an incentive, and the rules of The Pitch's Best of KC awards prohibit payment or other incentives for votes, with disqualification possible. Gifts you give regulars anyway are a separate matter, but I'd keep them out of the nomination and final weeks so nobody reads them as a trade.

Are people's choice awards in Kansas City all run by The Pitch?

No. The Pitch's Best of KC is one reader program, run by The Pitch KC with more than 500 categories, and any other people's choice awards in Kansas City, such as a Kansas City Magazine list where one runs, follow their own publisher's rules. Before promoting a 2026 or 2027 entry, confirm which program the nomination link belongs to, because limits and dates do not carry across.

What we do not do

Voting Now cannot move The Pitch's finalist cut, its software screen, its hand audit or its choice of Best of KC winners, and we never promise a place. We do not hand Kansas City customers gifts, discounts or gift baskets for picks, because the paper's rules prohibit incentives. We supply no accounts, no scripts and no repeat entries past the one-per-day nomination limit or the one-per-round final limit. We take no work on political or governmental votes.

Two rulebooks: the platform's and the organizer's

A contest vote sits under two rulebooks, the platform's and the organizer's. Meta's Spam standard lists offering anything of monetary value in exchange for engagement as a covered behavior, and the Santa Barbara Independent says it will disqualify a business that offers voters incentives of any kind. Voting Now reads both rulebooks before it plans anything, and a clause that forbids outside promotion ends the job.

Why a count built by real people reads as ordinary

Contest platforms check votes as routine. Easypromos runs each vote through 11 security controls and does not count one that fails any of them, and Woobox says voting fraud is becoming more common as contests grow popular. Voting Now promotes to real people who choose for themselves, at the contest's own pace, and none of this is a method for getting past a check.

What the law says, and what Voting Now refuses

Under 16 CFR 465.8, buying fake indicators of social media influence for a commercial purpose can violate the FTC's rule, which is one reason Voting Now promotes to real people and does not bring in bought counts. The FTC's Endorsement Guides also require a paid creator to disclose the connection clearly. Whether outside promotion is lawful for a given contest is a question for a lawyer, and Voting Now takes no political or governmental votes.

What no quote can promise

No quote promises a win, a ranking or a vote count, because the organizer counts the votes and applies its own rules. The Santa Barbara Independent, for one, says it will disqualify a business that offers voters incentives of any kind. Nothing runs before the client approves a written quote.
