Wisconsin Public-Vote Contests: Original Data, How to Win
Our tracking counts 106 recurring public-vote programs in Wisconsin, and 144 of their 201 records are best of Wisconsin business awards. The programs are distinct organizers seen from 2018 to 2026 in a snapshot dated 2026-10-02. Openings peak in June and closings in April. Organizers' own sites carry 92 records and Poll.fm 70. Shepherd Express says its Best of Milwaukee draws well over a hundred thousand votes a year.

How many recurring public-vote contests run in Wisconsin?
Our contest database counts 106 distinct recurring public-vote programs in Wisconsin, drawn from 201 curated records seen between 2018 and 2026 in the snapshot of 2026-10-02. Business awards account for 144 of those 201 records and sport for 41, with pets-and-babies polls at 7, food at 6 and pet polls at 2.
The distance between 106 and 201 is repetition. One organizer can fill several records: a nomination round and a final round, a 2019 edition and a 2024 one. So 106 is closer to the number of rule pages a Wisconsin business owner would actually have to read, and 201 is how many separate windows those organizers opened.
Wisconsin leans hard toward shops, bars, clinics and services. A little over seven in ten records are business awards, which means the contest you are most likely to be asked about is a reader poll about a business. Sports polls are the second group, about one record in five. Photo and pet polls are a thin slice.
Which Wisconsin programs are the biggest, by their own counts?
Shepherd Express says its Best of Milwaukee draws well over a hundred thousand votes a year, and its 2024 write-in stage listed more than 350 categories, up from more than 300 in 2019. Milwaukee Magazine and Isthmus in Madison run the other two Wisconsin reader polls with published rules.
Shepherd Express goes further and calls Best of Milwaukee the largest local readers' choice. I'd take the vote count as the useful part of that claim. A poll with a six-figure turnout and hundreds of categories spreads its readers thin, and a single category can be decided by far fewer people than the headline number suggests.
Milwaukee Magazine runs a separate Best of Milwaukee Readers' Choice, with more than 60 categories in 2023 and one vote per user per day. Same city, nearly the same name, two organizers. A customer who clicks the wrong one has helped nobody, so the link you send matters more than the words around it.
Madison is smaller. According to Isthmus, more than 5,300 readers voted in one edition of its Madison's Favorites poll. Each of those readers had to complete at least 20 categories, so a few dozen regulars who actually fill in the form can carry real weight in a narrow category.
Which months do Wisconsin contests open and close in?
June is the most common opening month for recurring Wisconsin programs, with 22 of the 157 that record a usual start, ahead of April at 20 and May at 19. April is the most common closing month at 24 of 157, with May and June close behind at 23 each.
Read those two lists together and the pattern is a spring overlap rather than a season. April through June holds 61 of the 157 openings and 70 of the 157 closings. One program's nomination round is ending while another's is starting, often in the same city and for the same kind of business.
The remaining 96 openings are spread over the other nine months. A month table cannot tell you when your own poll opens; the organizer's page can. Shepherd Express lets readers change their Best of Milwaukee picks until a round ends, so each round's closing date is the one worth writing on the wall.
How long does a Wisconsin promotion window last?
The median Wisconsin voting or nomination promotion lasts 28 days, measured over 73 promotions whose platform record gives both a start and an end date, with starts between 2017 and 2026. Recurring programs and one-off polls are counted together in that figure.
Four weeks is short for the way most owners ask. A business that waits until the second week to tell its customers has already given away a quarter of the window. Under a once-a-day allowance like Milwaukee Magazine's, 28 days is 28 chances per person, and nobody you know will use all of them.
Half of those 73 windows closed in 28 days or less. That is the useful way to read a median. Plan as if your poll is one of the short ones, have the first message ready on the opening day, and treat any extra week as a bonus.
Where Wisconsin contests run: own sites, Poll.fm and three hosts
Organizers' own websites host 92 of the 201 recurring Wisconsin records in our tracking, Poll.fm 70, Second Street 12, Your Choice Awards 11 and GoGo Photo Contest 7. Shepherd Express, for one, placed its 2019 Best of Milwaukee nomination form on its own page, with one nomination per category per reader.
The host decides what a supporter sees: a sign-in, a gallery, a counter that resets. The organizer decides what counts. On Shepherd Express's form a reader could pick one entry per category and come back to change it before the round closed. On Milwaukee Magazine's page the allowance was one vote per user per day. Two counters, one city.
Wisconsin photo contests are the smallest group on the list. GoGo Photo Contest carries 7 records, and pets-and-babies polls another 7, and the two groups may overlap. For any 2025 or 2026 photo gallery, the entry dates and the per-person allowance sit on that gallery's own page, and no statewide calendar replaces it.
What wins a Milwaukee or Madison reader poll?
Shepherd Express picks its Best of Milwaukee finalists from the top nominees in each category, so a Wisconsin business reaches the final round only after customers write its name in during nominations. The 2019 final round then offered multiple-choice answers in every category.
Then comes the minimum. Shepherd Express wanted 15 completed categories in 2012 and 5 in 2019, and Isthmus wanted 20 for Madison's Favorites. A customer who fills in your category and closes the tab may leave a form that does not count. I'd put the edition's number in the first line of every message.
Write-in rounds are open-ended, and Best of Milwaukee's covered more than 300 categories in 2019. Pick one exact business name and one category before you ask anyone. Three spellings of the same bakery can scatter its own nominations, and nobody at the paper is obliged to add them up for you.
What does not win is volume from the wrong people. A reader poll counts readers, and the ones who know your business are the ones who fill in twenty categories without complaining.
Do Wisconsin contest rules allow promotion of an entry?
Both Milwaukee organizers invite promotion in writing. Shepherd Express publishes a Best of Milwaukee marketing kit and tells nominees to use anything on it, and Milwaukee Magazine offers downloadable assets to nominated businesses for promoting the vote. Neither treats asking customers for support as foul play.
Milwaukee Magazine also sells ad placement beside categories on its awards voting page, pitched as a way to stay top of mind with voters, and it limits category-group sponsorships to eight. I read that as a signal, not a permission slip. The count rule underneath stays one vote per user per day.
Wisconsin's consumer-protection agency, DATCP, adds the opposite warning from the entrant's side: legitimate contests do not ask you to pay to improve your chances, raffles aside. And I'd offer customers nothing in return for a pick. A reward for a choice changes why it was made, and the organizer decides what that is worth.
Voting Now does not sell votes. We run paid promotion for contest entries through our own social accounts, partner groups and bloggers, aimed at real Wisconsin readers, and we decline any contest whose rules forbid paid promotion.
- Shepherd Express: a public marketing kit for Best of Milwaukee nominees, with an open invitation to use any of it.
- Milwaukee Magazine: downloadable assets for nominated businesses, plus paid ad spots beside its voting categories.
- Isthmus: a 20-category minimum that turns a quick favor from a customer into a longer form.
- DATCP: a statewide warning against contests that charge entrants to raise their odds, raffles excepted.

Step by step
-
Find the edition's category floor
Look up how many categories a form needs before it counts. Shepherd Express moved from 15 in 2012 to 5 in 2019, and Isthmus asked for 20, so last year's number may be wrong.
-
Get written in early
Ask customers during the write-in round, since Best of Milwaukee finalists are the top nominees in each category. A business missing from the nomination stage has nothing to ask for in the final.
-
Use the organizer's own kit
Download the graphics Shepherd Express and Milwaukee Magazine offer nominees and post those rather than homemade art. Readers recognize the paper's look, and the link inside points at the right poll.
-
Time reminders to the reset
Match each reminder to the counter: once a day at Milwaukee Magazine, once per round at Shepherd Express, where readers may still change a pick until the round closes. A last reminder there still matters.
-
Ask Voting Now for a rules read
Send Voting Now the program's link for a free analysis. We read the Wisconsin organizer's rules, say whether paid contest promotion fits them, and agree a quote before anything runs.
Questions and answers
Which local business awards can a Wisconsin company enter?
Reader polls about businesses make up most of what Wisconsin offers: 144 of the 201 recurring records in our tracking are business awards. In Milwaukee that means Shepherd Express's Best of Milwaukee and Milwaukee Magazine's Readers' Choice, and in Madison, Isthmus's Madison's Favorites. Find out which one your customers actually read before you ask them for anything, because each counts in its own way.
Can the Milwaukee method help you get Best of Omaha?
Yes. The order of work carries over to Best of Omaha, even though Wisconsin's numbers do not: nominations first, finalists second, and a category minimum that can change between editions. Shepherd Express itself went from 15 required categories in 2012 to 5 in 2019. Read the Omaha program's current rules before borrowing any figure from a Milwaukee page.
Would the same steps win Best of Boston?
No. Steps built on Milwaukee Magazine's once-a-day allowance or Isthmus's 20-category floor work only where those rules apply. What helps win Best of Boston is the same sequence with Boston's own numbers: get nominated in the open round, learn that edition's minimum and reset, and ask supporters on its schedule. Copying another program's limits is how forms end up not counting.
How do you get nominated for Best of Las Vegas, compared with Milwaukee?
Nominations in any reader poll come from readers writing a business in during the open round. In Milwaukee, Shepherd Express's 2019 rules gave each reader one nomination per category, and the top nominees became finalists. Las Vegas has its own organizer and thresholds, so read its rules page for the nomination window and any minimum before asking a single customer.
How many Wisconsin photo contests run on GoGo Photo Contest?
GoGo Photo Contest hosts 7 of the 201 recurring Wisconsin records in our 2026-10-02 snapshot. Pets-and-babies polls account for another 7 records, and the two groups may overlap. For a 2025 or 2026 edition, the entry dates and the per-person allowance are printed on that gallery's own page, and no statewide list stands in for it.
How does Best of Madison voting work at Isthmus?
Isthmus runs its Madison reader poll as Madison's Favorites, and a form there was eligible only with at least 20 categories completed. The organizer announced that more than 5,300 readers took part in one edition. Before you share a Best of Madison voting link in 2026, confirm the organizer's name on the page, since a different Madison title would come with different rules.

Nobody at Voting Now fills in a Best of Milwaukee form, a Milwaukee Magazine daily pick or a Madison's Favorites entry for a client. Our ads and posts reach Wisconsin readers; what those readers choose, and whether Shepherd Express counts a business among its top nominees, is out of our hands. We never reward anyone for a pick and never promise a title, and we turn down political or governmental votes along with any contest whose rules bar paid promotion.
A contest vote sits under two rulebooks, the platform's and the organizer's. Meta's Spam standard lists offering anything of monetary value in exchange for engagement as a covered behavior, and the Santa Barbara Independent says it will disqualify a business that offers voters incentives of any kind. Voting Now reads both rulebooks before it plans anything, and a clause that forbids outside promotion ends the job.
Contest platforms check votes as routine. Easypromos runs each vote through 11 security controls and does not count one that fails any of them, and Woobox says voting fraud is becoming more common as contests grow popular. Voting Now promotes to real people who choose for themselves, at the contest's own pace, and none of this is a method for getting past a check.
Under 16 CFR 465.8, buying fake indicators of social media influence for a commercial purpose can violate the FTC's rule, which is one reason Voting Now promotes to real people and does not bring in bought counts. The FTC's Endorsement Guides also require a paid creator to disclose the connection clearly. Whether outside promotion is lawful for a given contest is a question for a lawyer, and Voting Now takes no political or governmental votes.
No quote promises a win, a ranking or a vote count, because the organizer counts the votes and applies its own rules. The Santa Barbara Independent, for one, says it will disqualify a business that offers voters incentives of any kind. Nothing runs before the client approves a written quote.
